The Program

The Fiji Program Support Facility (the Facility) was established in 2017 to support and implement Australia’s aid programs such as health, education, Australia Awards and governance in Fiji. The Facility integrates cross-cutting themes, including gender equality, disability inclusion, climate change, emergency preparedness and response and civil society engagement, and seeks to strengthen program outcomes by better addressing the needs of beneficiaries including those who are often marginalised.

The Education Sector Program works in close partnership with the Ministry of Education, Heritage and the Arts (MEHA) to improve learning outcomes for all boys and girls. It focuses on strengthening literacy and numeracy, inclusive education, capacities of institutional systems and policies, and research-based evidence to inform decision-making.

The Position

In coordination with the Curriculum Advisory Unit (CAS) of the Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts (MEHA), the Literacy and Numeracy Coaches will support five schools each within an education district. They will work with teachers and students from Years 1 – 4 to support implementation of the pilot curriculum and classroom pedagogy through in-classroom training and support, and the provision of professional development.

Coaches will support teachers by modelling lessons, team teaching and assisting with planning to improve the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy. Furthermore, they will monitor progress in teaching and learning within their assigned schools and engage in professional discussions based on observations and data.

Reporting to the Literacy and Numeracy Specialist and working within a larger literacy and numeracy team, each coach will receive training prior to deployment and will have access ongoing technical support.

The Person

The ideal candidates will bring a passion for teaching; at least five years’ recent experience as a teacher in a primary school; advanced knowledge of literacy and numeracy pedagogy; capacity to model and present confidently in classrooms; ability to adopt supportive and adaptive coaching approaches; and an open mind to learning new teaching strategies.

This position is locally engaged and reserved for citizens and residents of Fiji. A competitive local remuneration will be offered to attract high performing individuals.
