The Protection, Gender Mainstreaming and Accountability Advisor will provide strong technical support in areas of protection (especially child and youth protection), gender mainstreaming and accountability in the LWF South Sudan country program. The position holder will be responsible for facilitating the implementation of relevant provisions of LWF’s Child Protection Policy, Gender Justice Policy, Accountability and related international standards. The incumbent will also play a key role in building the capacity of the country program staff in the areas of protection, gender mainstreaming and accountability and will ensure active engagement of the country program in related coordination mechanisms.
Master’s Degree in social science, gender studies, development studies, human rights or other relevant fields.
Knowledge and Experience
Minimum 5 years of successful experience in a senior leadership position in protection, gender justice, social accountability in the field of refugee response, human rights, sustainable development, and/or humanitarian response. Adequate experience in gender analysis and promoting/using conflict sensitive approaches and tools.
Strong leadership and a proven ability to enable teams, to coach, nurture and motivate colleagues, creating a conducive working environment together with excellent communication skills.
Proven track record in the field of child protection, youth protection, gender equality, advocacy for human rights and accountability in the humanitarian context.
English: Advanced (written, spoken)

Remote support to teams
Ensure that LWF’s policy and operational interests in the area of protection (especially child protection/GBV), gender justice and accountability are actively represented.
Lead the development of the contextualized version of the LWF Gender Justice Policy for the country program.
Support to develop the young women/girls’ internship program that the country program is implementing.
Support implementation of child protection interventions and mainstreaming in the country program ensuring compliance with LWF and donors’ policies and guidelines and other relevant strategy documents.
Provide active support to LWF’s protection and other concerned staff including in the areas of case management of most vulnerable children including proper documentation.
Compile updates and analysis on child protection and gender which highlight trends, programming gaps, in particular in relation to context priorities.
Assess capacity building needs in the country program in the area of protection, gender, accountability and identify training opportunities and design and deliver trainings/workshops as required.
Facilitate learning and identification of good practices and information sharing on safeguarding/ protection, including on strengthening linkages with education, GBV, gender, community-based protection, and livelihood, among others.
Support dissemination and implementation of the Minimum Standards for Child Protection/ Protection in Humanitarian Action and other child protection/ Protection/ GBV tools and Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS) resources.
Undertake monitoring and support missions to the field for guidance and support with a particular focus on child protection/ protection mainstreaming in the overall protection response.
Ensure that field staff have access to and are aware of the latest protection approaches, interventions and tools.
Participate in existing relevant networks, working groups and initiatives, and where applicable seek new partnerships which will strengthen LWF’s protection response, including with the Protection Cluster.
Represent LWF in external technical coordination mechanisms on issues relating to Child Protection/ Protection/and gender mainstreaming.
Undertake reviews of protection concerns in the country program interventions and provide ideas on practical solutions to address identified protection needs.
Ensure that guidelines and approaches for identification and addressing of protection needs for children at risk and other vulnerable project participants, especially women and girls, are in place and followed.
Ensure prevention and response mechanisms are strengthened in relation to the main risks for children’s exposure to physical harm, sexual harm/exploitation and child labour in the country program areas of operation.
Work with other LWF staff, concerned partners, community structures, children, young people and other vulnerable groups to strengthen safeguards to prevent SGBV, sexual exploitation and abuse and harmful traditional practices against girls and boys both in schools and community.
Develop tools and relevant participatory approaches to engage communities and their leaders in the country program’s operational areas to dialogue on protection and accountability concerns/issues affecting children and other vulnerable groups and support with the implementation of agreed actions.
Lead efforts to strengthen and operationalize the functionality of community-based protection and accountability committees, networks and groups in the operational areas of the country program.
Work with technical colleagues from LWF HQ, the country office, donors/partners, and others to develop high quality tools, manuals and guidelines, especially in relation to child protection/ gender justice and accountability.
Provide hands-on technical support to core frontline staff on matters related to protection and gender mainstreaming and accountability.
Support LWF focal points and field-based structures on accountability to entrench accountability mechanisms, establish a data base and carry out responses and confidential investigations on accountability breach cases.
Support staff on capacity needs identification and provide tailor made training based on capacity gaps on protection issues.
Support infusion of technical aspects of gender and protection mainstreaming in project design and proposal development.
Lead/manage gender context analysis exercises required to be completed as part of proposal development processes or otherwise.
Support review policies and strategies and advise the Country Management Team on gender justice and mainstreaming.
Support in the monitoring and reporting on protection, gender mainstreaming and accountability in all project locations.
Support the development of awareness and advocacy messages on protection and gender justice and lead LWF action in such advocacy as may be assigned.
