Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM) is an independent non-governmental non-profit organization. Within the framework of the work of the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM) in building a society based on respecting and protecting the right to free expression of opinion, supporting media work, and raising its standard, the Media and Freedoms Program at the SCM plans to implement a study that addresses:

“The use of technology in investigative journalism”

SCM is looking for a “researcher” based on the attached technical requirements and the following principles:

  • Prepare the research methodology and share it with the project team before 25th June 2024.
  • Preparing an opinion poll form directed to Syrian journalists and analyzing the data received, including samples of previous investigative reports.
  • Completing a draft of the research on the use of technology in the media (with a focus on models from the Syrian media) and submitting it for audit on 10th September 2024.
  • Review and submit the final draft at the end of November 2024.
  • Review the translated version of the research.
  • Participation in the research launch webinar.

Required documents:

  • Proof of work in similar projects that includes:
    • Excellent academic qualifications, at least bachelor’s degree or higher in Media.
    • Demonstrable experience in developing similar research for the media sector (at least five years), preferably in investigative reporting and technology.
    • Proven technical experience, especially in the use of open source.
    • Experience and understand the Syrian context and the issues stakeholders face in Syria.
    • Demonstrable extensive experience in research, research methods,
    • Excellent analytical skills – designing research questions, familiarity with (and appropriate use of) research methods, and report writing.
    • At least 2 References from previous projects.
  • Financial offer including:
    • The Financial compensation.
    • The validity of the offer (duration- date)

Using technology in investigative journalism

SCM is looking for a researcher based on the following technical requirements:

  • Prepare the research methodology and share it with the project team no later than June 25, 2024.

  • Completing a draft of the research on the use of technology in the media (with a focus on models from the Syrian media) and submitting it for scrutiny on September 10, 2024.
  • Review and submit the final draft by the end of November 2024.
  • Review the translated version of the research.
  • Participation in the research launch symposium.

Required Documents:

  • Proof of experience in similar projects including:
    • Excellent academic qualifications, including at least a bachelor’s degree or higher in media.
    • Demonstrable experience developing research similar to the media sector (at least five years), preferably in investigative reporting and technology.
    • Proven technical experience, particularly in the use of open source.
    • Experience and understanding of the Syrian context and issues faced by stakeholders in Syria.
    • Extensive demonstrable experience in research and research methods.
    • Excellent analytical skills – designing research questions, familiarity with (and appropriate use of) research methods, report writing.
    • At least two references from previous work.
  • Financial offer includes:
    • Financial compensation required.
    • Offer validity (work period – offer validity date)

Evaluation Criteria:

  • The relevance of the applicant’s experience to the research topic and his having conducted similar research (70%).
  • Financial offer (30%).
